Students will promote and organize a book drive to encourage reading and improve literacy in needy communities.

Academic Focus: Language Arts

Academic Content Standards:

Writing 1.0 Students write clear, coherent sentences and paragraphs that develop a central idea. Their writing shows they consider audience and purpose. Students progress through the stages of the writing process.

1.1 Select a focus, and organizational structure, and a point of view based on purpose, audience, length, and format requirements.

1.2 Create multiple-paragraph compositions.

1.4 Write fluidly and legibly in cursive.

1.7 Use various reference materials (dictionary, thesaurus, etc.).

1.9 Demonstrate basic keyboarding skills and familiarity with computer technology.

1.10 Edit and revise.

Written and Oral English Language Conventions 1.1 Use simple and compound sentences in writing and speaking.

1.3 Identify and use regular and irregular verbs, adverbs, prepositions, and coordinating conjunctions in writing and speaking.

Curricular Activity

Students write a multiple paragraph essay to inform by composing a five paragraph essay which states three reasons why donating books is beneficial to the community.

Students create flyers detailing the upcoming school-wide book drive. The best flyer will be copied and distributed.

Flyers include:
  • Date of the book drive
  • Types of books that are wanted (pre-school through 6th)
  • Why the books are being collected.
  • Who the books will help
  • Where the books will be collected
  • Encouraging students to empty their bookshelves of books they no longer need.
Students make a speech about the book drive that includes the above information and at least three reasons why donating books is beneficial to the community.

The five best will give their speech to all classes in the school and/or at an assembly.

Students collect and sort books by category: pre-school, K-3, 4-6, 7-8, 9-12.

Students check appropriateness and condition of books.

Students coordinate book delivery with parents/faculty representative.

Afterwards, students reflect on their participation in the book drive.
