8th Grade: Camp Heartland

Camp Heartland is the charitable non-profit organization that runs camps for children impacted by HIV/AIDS. The Southern California chapter of this fine organization runs a camp located in Malibu for our local youngsters. They provide a poignant assembly program for our schools, as well as informational materials for our classroom use. The assembly is very informative and serves as an excellent springboard from which to launch science lessons on AIDS/HIV.

Additional educational benefit is gained through "reflection" writing, where a number of California state educational standards can be incorporated.

Finally, our youngsters conduct a collection of money to help fund camp activities. This activity also has educational benefit and it follows California State standards with respect to mathematical concepts.

The speakers were speaking positively. They weren't ashamed that they were HIV positive. They were trying to live normal lives."

"I learned that the best 'cure' for HIV/AIDS is friendship and caring."

"I believe it made kids realize how serious the problem HIV/AIDS is. The speakers were very courageous."

"This presentation was very important for us to hear as it was extremely helpful in clearing up some of the ideas that I didn't understand."

"I really liked the speakers and how they made it alive by sharing their own personal stories."
