1st Grade: Operation School Bell

Visiting Operation School Bell, run by the Assistance League of Southern California, is more like going to a store than receiving charity!

Each student, referred by the Los Angeles Unified School District or other local agency, receives basic new clothing, personal grooming items, plus a backpack, a toy, and a book.

OSB wants to make sure that children can go to school and receive an education - because they are appropriately dressed and feel comfortable. Correct clothing increases confidence and self-esteem; it costs about $85.00 to provide clothing for just one child.

Each child receives basic school clothing and 5 pair of new socks, and that is where the Beverly Hills Unified School District kids fit in. It's about caring and ensuring a better future for other kids in. Every year, first grade students embark on a project to collect pairs or packages of new socks. Encouraging school-wide support, all the students are asked to wear their Craziest Socks. First graders make posters and create speeches and poems. Math adding, subtracting, graphing, and sorting - come into play as the young students collect the socks and celebrate the joy of helping others.
