Success Story: Used Battery Drive
BHUSD Service-Learning: Learn and Serve. Students in Ms. Utley's Environmental Science class at Beverly Hills High School were dismayed to learn that used batteries, a common component of household waste, are toxic to the water and air. Used Battery Drive: Nicole and Josh testing the used batteries. One student, Lexie A., suggested that the class organize a school-wide drive to collect used batteries and bring them to a LA County-sponsored Household Hazardous Waste Round-up. Lexie dubbed the drive "Energize the Environment". After organizing themselves into groups (each with a different task), the students educated their fellow students (through posters and in-class presentations) and collected used batteries from individual classrooms. Used Battery Drive: Stephanie and Roxy collecting used batteries. The collected batteries were then tested on a voltmeter to ensure that they were really 'used.' Batteries with at least fifty percent of the power remaining were donated to a local homeless shelter. The rest of the batteries (roughly 90%) were taken to an LA County-sponsored Hazardous Waste Round-up for proper disposal. The classroom that brought in the most used batteries was treated to a pizza party that was donated by the local Dominoes Pizza! BHUSD High School Curriculum: Used Battery Drive |
