Success Story: Battle of the Schools
Kerry Mazor's 7th-8th Grade Super Science Elective at El Rodeo School is very involved in Service-Learning. For the past several years, her students have entered Generation Earth's "Battle of the Schools." The focus of this competition is to reduce waste on the school campus through conservation and recycling. After winning 3rd place in 2002, Ms. Mazor's class won 1st place in 2003!!! The prize was a campus-wide concert by KIIS-FM and a trophy made of recycled glass. "I feel that this Super Science Elective class has changed my perspective on recycling and saving our landfills from becoming too full. I, myself, have changed in many ways from experiencing this class. [...] As opposed to throwing everything away such as paper, food, plastic, etc, I now am helping the environment by not increasing the risk of landfills becoming 'landfulls'." -Alyssa "A while ago I didn't care too much for recycling, but I did it sometimes. But now if I see something on the floor I pick it up. I feel so good when I do it. It makes me feel that I can make a difference. I feel recycling has been very effective. We lowered the trash level and made a huge difference at El Rodeo." -Natasha "Recycling the paper in the classes has been a job that has been done well. We have been taking recycling boxes that contain paper to a recycling bin and the paper has been taken to a recycling center. Then the paper is recycled into new paper products. We are making paper in class to show how this is done. [...] I feel that this class has taught me to respect the world." -Kristinal "I feel very good inside for what we are doing because we are helping the school community so much. I learned a lot from this experience such as how to be more responsible towards my job. I feel that if everyone felt like I did about this situation we would have less trash." -Mike "I feel very good that I have been recycling and have a positive attitude about it. I am very happy that I am saving trees and our environment." -Pollin "We did a 'Waste Audit Activity' on Earth Day to see where all the trash and recycled paper is in our school. We wrote letters to the classes that we recycle. We have done a lot of things during this Service-Learning Project. I think that we really have a great impact on the recycling. This is definitely worthwhile because we have made a big difference in our school." -Shawn Kerry Mazor's Service-Learning Site Generation Earth Site See more pictures |
