Success Story: High School Garden
Bryan Herbold's Life Science students are feeding the world!  They have designed and cultivated a school garden at Beverly Hills High School. The students planted tomato plants, corn, artichokes, bell peppers, cayenne and chipotle peppers, cucumbers, and strawberries. The students learned irrigation techniques, water management, tilling weeding and basic garden care. They had a ladybug release and distributed two Praying Mantis egg cases. The IPM was done to avoid using pesticides and to keep the garden more planet friendly! The students celebrated their harvest with an end of the year BBQ. The bulk of the produce went to "Plant a Row for the Hungry". The BHHS Garden Project helped the students realize the intense work that goes into creating a viable garden and habitat for butterflies, hummingbirds. Over time, the students saw a reduction in the amount of litter from other students who tossed their trash in the garden!  Reflection from Mr. Herbold: "Hopefully this project will continue to grow great minds and strong bodies. If we sow a seed of hope, we will reap continued academic achievement, camaraderie, and success." Reflection from Students: Michelle: "By working in the garden I feel like I am doing a great job! I really enjoy working there." Mack: "The first garden died, but rather than beat ourselves up over it, we just planted it again. We are very proud of ourselves, and we feel like we accomplished something." Christine: "Working in the garden is hard work. You can�t just sit here and watch the plants grow. But I feel good after the work is done."  |
